U.S. Disruption Mitigation Workshop

Jointly sponsored by the US Burning Plasma Organization, US Virtual Laboratory for Technology, and US ITER Project Office.

General Atomics
San Diego, California
March 12-13, 2012

The US ITER Project Office has been given responsibility to provide ITER's Disruption Mitigation System (DMS). There are near term needs for project definition to have the project baseline approved by DOE, and to define the DMS envelope and utility connections needed for the ITER port plug design review scheduled for summer 2013.

To begin addressing these immediate needs, a meeting of experts is being called to review the system definition for the DMS and refine technology concepts to help meet these schedule constraints and get the physics community up to speed on what is realizable in the ITER environment. This input will be used to help make conceptual designs and develop prototype scale versions of the technology to be tested on present machines to give more confidence that it will work as intended on ITER.

Frequently asked questions:

Is this workshop only about mitigation techniques, or does it include disruption prediction and avoidance?
Since the most pressing need for the US program right now is to specify ITER's disruption mitigation system, the workshop will focus on mitigation techniques. Disruption prediction can be included to the extent that it would impact the choice or deployment of technique, e.g. how much notice will we have to react when a disruption is predicted?
