U.S. Disruption Mitigation Workshop
General Atomics
San Diego, California
March 12-13, 2012
The US ITER Project Office has been given responsibility to
provide ITER's Disruption Mitigation System (DMS).
There are near term needs for project definition to have
the project baseline approved by DOE, and to define the
DMS envelope and utility connections needed for the ITER
port plug design review scheduled for summer 2013.
To begin addressing these immediate needs, a meeting of
experts is being called to review the system definition
for the DMS and refine technology concepts to help meet
these schedule constraints and get the physics community
up to speed on what is realizable in the ITER environment.
This input will be used to help make conceptual designs
and develop prototype scale versions of the technology
to be tested on present machines to give more confidence
that it will work as intended on ITER.
Topics included:
- Disruptions in ITER - overview of the expected
disruption scenario and mitigation needs
- Disruption Mitigation System - envelope, interfaces,
tunability, and integration into the ITER control system
- Disruption Mitigation Technology concepts
- Experimental results and plans for existing machines
- Testing of ITER DMS concepts
- ITER DMS - schedule and design/fabrication process
- Control and dissipation of post-disruption runaway electron beams
Frequently asked questions:
- Is this workshop only about mitigation techniques, or does
it include disruption prediction and
avoidance?
- Since the most pressing need for the US program right now is
to specify ITER's
disruption mitigation system, the workshop will focus on mitigation
techniques. Disruption prediction
can be included to the extent that it would impact the choice or
deployment of technique, e.g. how much notice
will we have to react when a disruption is predicted?
Instructions for partipation:
- You can register for the workshop
here.
- Foreign participants who wish to attend in person must complete the form
linked below and on the
registration form (same form, you only need to do it once) by February 20
to insure you will be able to enter the GA site.
- You do not need to be present to participate. Information for remote
participants will be posted later; we will use both H.323 video and Readytalk
(for sharing presentations).
- While registering, you can request a slot to speak. Please understand that
we will not be able to accommodate all such requests as time is limited and
the workshop will be focused as described above.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR NON-US PARTICIPANTS
Per U.S. Department of Energy Foreign Visits and Assignments Order
142.3 chg. 1 all non-U.S. citizens visiting the
General Atomics Energy & Advanced Concepts Group must submit the information
requested on the Non-U.S. Visitor Form.
The form is located on the secured website:
https://diii-d.gat.com/ssl_form/nonus/.
It is important to complete and submit the form no later than February 20.
Approval must be obtained from the US Department of Energy prior to the visit.
