Events at the 59th
APS-DPP Conference in Milwaukee
The Town Meeting on ITER, originally scheduled for Thursday
evening, is cancelled. Dr. Bigot has an unavoidable last-minute conflict and
will not be able to visit the US during the APS conference. We regret any
inconvenience this may cause. We are attempting to set up an alternate forum
for the ITER Director General to address the U.S. Burning Plasma community.
The Research in Support of ITER session will still be held on
Wednesday afternoon, October 25 in room 201AB.
USBPO beginning an outreach effort
The second community workshop will be held at the University of Texas in Austin, December 11-15. Working groups are being formed now. For more information you can go to https://sites.google.com/site/usmfrstrategicdirections/workshop02_austin

New eNews editor
From August 2015 through April 2017,
Saskia Mordijck (William and Mary) acted as editor of the USBPO eNews. Since
she stepped down in April, I have been “acting editor.†I am pleased to
announce that starting with the regular October 31 issue, Walter Guttenfelder
of Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory has agreed to take over as editor.
Walter will pull double-duty as this will be in addition to his continuing role
as deputy leader of the USBPO Confinement and Transport Topical Group. I would
like to take this opportunity to thank both Saskia and Walter.

I would like to thank the nominating committee (Susana
Reyes, Gary Staebler, Jim Irby, and Walter Guttenfelder) and the candidates
(George, Paul, Vlad, and Boris Breizman of the University of Texas) for their
roles in putting forth and standing as a slate of high quality candidates. And
of course, a big thank you to the departing Council members, David Brower,
Juergen Rapp, Jim Terry, and François Waelbroeck.
We are currently working on identifying leadership
for the Energetic Particles, Fusion Engineering Science, Modeling and
Simulation, Operations and Control, and Plasma-Wave Interactions Topical
Groups, as the terms of their leaders are expiring. I hope to be able to announce
the outcome of that selection in the coming weeks.
